Fitness for Work Assessments

Understanding the impact of health conditions
in the workplace

What is a Fitness For Work Assessment?

Fitness for Work Assessments enable employers to fulfil their statutory requirements for workers in safety critical roles. These assessments are undertaken for a broad range of occupations, and in some industries are known as ‘safety critical medicals’.

Typically these assessments are completed on site at your workplace, and can be completed on an ad hoc basis or on routine visits for larger team.

Our Fitness for Work Assessments can include (but not limited to):

  • Lift truck medical

  • Driver medical

  • PCV / HGV medical

  • Confined space medical

  • Working at height

  • Working in hot / cold environments

  • Food handlers

  • Pregnancy assessment

  • Night Workers

  • Railway medical

  • Breathing apparatus medical

  • Ill Health Retirement – Conducted by a Qualified Occupational Health Physician.

How will a Fitness For Work Assessment benefit my business?

Fitness for Work Assessments consider any health conditions that may impact on an individual’s ability to undertake tasks safely.

The assessments will be specific to the employee’s job role and may include tests such as blood pressure measurement, vision check, spirometry or audiogram.  This will determine if any adjustments and/or restrictions are required by the employer to ensure the employee’s safety.

A fitness report will be provided to the employer to detail the outcome of the assessment with advice and any recommendations.

Are fitness for work assessments mandatory?

There are specific roles that do have a statutory component, for example, PCV / HGV driving and Railway work. Most fitness for work assessments are for a specific work environment, within which some health conditions may put the employee and/or the safety of their colleagues at risk. These are undertaken by employers as ‘good practice’ and form an essential element of risk management.
