New Starter Assessments

Ensuring employers are meeting their legal requirements through reasonable adjustments

What is a New Starter Assessment?

New Starter Assessments are used to assess an applicant for a specified work role after they have received their offer of employment.

As an employer, you need to know if there are any medical conditions that may impact on their ability to do their job safely and effectively.

In addition, you would want to know if the job role itself could have a negative impact on the applicants health, and whether there any reasonable adjustments required to meet legal obligations.

New Starter Assessments vary depending upon the role – but don’t worry; we can give you guidance as to what is required for the nature of the role you are recruiting for.

How does it work?

After the employer has made an offer of employment, OH One can complete a New Starter Assessment on your behalf. We will then provide you with a professional fitness to work report, advising you of the outcome and recommendations.

The assessment itself will vary depending upon the job role. For example, for a sedentary desk based job it can be a simple process that involves the completion of a questionnaire and, if required, a telephone assessment.

For job roles that may include physical activity and safety critical tasks, a questionnaire is used, and if required this is followed up with a telephone or face-to-face consultation.

Where possible we will complete these remotely to ensure a prompt and cost effective service can be offered. On site, face to face assessments will only be offered where we feel it is necessary, or at the employers request.

Can I do new starter assessments at recruitment stage?

Under the provisions of the Equality Act (2010), other than in specific circumstances, employers must not ask about the health of job applicants before a job offer is made.
