How to support your staff returning from long-term leave

It’s been an exciting time for everyone. COVID restrictions are slowly lifting and more people are heading back into their office.

However, for some people, this return to work is more daunting than delightful.

As a manager, you’re expected to help ease your staff through any transitional periods that they may struggle with.

Whether they’re returning from remote working or illness, this four-step system should help ease them through what may be a jarring experience.

Step one:

One of the first things you’ll need to do is speak with your employees.

This may be more difficult over a Zoom call; however, an open and honest conversation is the first step to understanding any expectations, feelings, and wants that may arise during the transition. By understanding the other’s standpoint, you’ll be able to come to a mutual agreement on expectations.

Step two:

Let your employee follow their own schedule.

Regardless of the reason as to why they were off work or as to why they’re now returning, each individual will have their own optimum working hours.

If you’re able to, allowing your employee to return to work at their own pace will be welcomed and allow the employee to adapt their schedule as they feel. For example, some may rush back, while others may take their time.

Step three:

Once your employee is integrated back within the office, you’ll want to have regular catch-ups with your staff member to ensure they’re coping with the radical change.

You can’t predict how one person may respond over the other, so keep an open mind. During this step, it is also worth creating an action plan where your employee can follow clear instructions, hit achievements, and make adjustments as needed.

Step four:

If your employee is still struggling, it may be worth seeking external support.

Depending on the reason as to why your employee was off for a long duration of time, will depend on the type of support they may need.

However, at OH One, our goal is to keep your employees in work for as long as feasibly possible.

Whether it’s a team-building workshop or working with one of our nurses, knowing that your employee has support from an external place is a huge relief for many people as it becomes a safe space for people to turn to without fear of judgment from colleagues.
