Men's Health Week 2023: Focusing on Men's Mental Health in the Digital Age
Between the 12th and 18th of June, the U.K. will unite to recognise Men's Health Week 2023. Organised by the Men's Health Forum, this annual event aims to raise awareness of preventable health problems that disproportionately affect men and empower them to confront these issues head-on.
This year's theme, Men's Health and the Internet, sheds light on the impact of technology and social media on men's mental health.
Men and Mental Health
Mental health is a significant concern for men, with approximately 1 in 8 men in the UK experiencing common mental health problems such as anxiety, stress, or depression, as reported by the Mental Health Foundation.
Unfortunately, these issues often go untreated and can worsen over time. Startling statistics show that 3 out of 4 suicides in the UK are men, making suicide the leading cause of death for men under 45.
These numbers underscore the urgency of addressing the stigma surrounding men's mental health, encouraging open discussions, and promoting timely treatment.
Breaking the Stigma
Despite increasing awareness campaigns, a stigma still exists around men's mental health, causing many men to feel uncomfortable discussing their problems openly. Recent statistics reveal that 40% of men do not talk about their mental health with friends or family, leading them to suffer in silence.

Identifying Symptoms
Recognising the signs of a serious mental health issue can be challenging. Sometimes, it may seem like just a bad day, but certain symptoms may indicate a deeper problem. These signs include anger, irritability, changes in mood, difficulty sleeping, social withdrawal, low energy, substance abuse, and neglecting personal hygiene.
It's important for men to understand that seeking help is not a sign of weakness but a courageous step toward resolving their issues.
