National Workaholics Day: Unlocking the Workaholic Code And Promote Work-Life Balance

On National Workaholics Day, which falls on July 5th each year, we reflect on the importance of achieving a healthy work-life balance.

While having a strong work ethic is commendable, it is crucial to strike a balance between work and personal life to ensure overall success and wellbeing. Unfortunately, workaholism can pose risks to health, relationships, and ultimately, productivity and company success.

Interestingly, workaholism is often viewed positively in society and can even be rewarded with higher pay and promotions. This contradictory attitude sends mixed messages to employees who are encouraged to prioritise work-life balance and disconnect from work during weekends.

To help you assess whether you lean towards being a dedicated worker or a workaholic, consider these six signs:

  1. Do you find yourself bringing work to bed, on weekends, or vacations?

  2. Is work the primary topic of conversation, and do you excel at it?

  3. Do you believe working long hours is acceptable as long as you love what you do?

  4. Do you become impatient with individuals who prioritize activities outside of work?

  5. Do you approach tasks with excessive energy and competitiveness, even during leisure time?

  6. Have your long hours negatively affected your personal relationships?

It is essential for HR professionals and managers to distinguish between individuals who work diligently and those who exhibit workaholic tendencies.

For all the dedicated workers out there, today is an opportunity to take a step back and prioritise self-care. If you find yourself falling into the workaholic category, consider indulging in an afternoon nap, reading a book, or enjoying a few hours of entertainment. Remember, there will always be time to complete your tasks tomorrow!

"Amidst the changing landscape of work, wisdom lies in knowing when to step back and prioritise your health. True success is not merely about the hours you invest, but the wellbeing you preserve along the journey." Rick Livesey, Clinical Operations Lead OH One

For everyone else, let's take this day to appreciate the workaholics in our lives and acknowledge their accomplishments. Celebrate Workaholics Day by arriving at the office slightly earlier than usual and tackling a project you've been putting off.

Let's use this occasion to emphasise the importance of achieving a healthy work-life balance. Achieving work-life balance offers numerous benefits, including improved physical and mental health, enhanced productivity, stronger relationships, increased creativity, and overall life satisfaction. It allows individuals to recharge, engage in meaningful activities outside of work, and maintain a sense of fulfillment in both personal and professional realms.

Wishing you a Happy Workaholics Day!
