Equal Work Opportunities = a Happy Workplace

In our current society, many people feel held back from opportunities in work because they don't fit certain biased criteria.

These people may face discrimination due to the colour of their skin, the gender they present themselves as, their sexual orientation, or something else entirely.

This can cause harm to the morale and atmosphere of a workplace.

What Does a Lack of Opportunities Look Like?

To be held back in your career for things that are beyond your own control can completely damage your mental health and self-esteem.

No one can control their ethnicity or gender, or whether they have a disability. To judge people and define them by these aspects of themselves has nothing to do with with their ability to be a good employee.

A lack of equal opportunities in the workplace can look like:

  • unequal pay: the gender pay gap is very real, to pay a female less than a male when they do the exact same role is nothing short of discrimination.

  • lack of progression: do all employees have the same opportunities for growth? Or are promotions only available to those who fit a certain look?

  • a biased perspective: do you expect your employees to act a certain way depending on their religious inclination, gender, or identity?

How Does a Lack of Opportunities Impact People?

When we stop people from growing and developing their roles, they become stagnant.

It might be that your employees become bored or tired with their day-to-day, in this instance, it isn't unusual for employees to seek new jobs or external opportunities.

In a worst-case scenario, this boredom can manifest itself into a negative mental mindset. It might be that people will begin to wonder whether they're good enough, this can ruin self-esteem and lead them into an anxious or depressive thought pattern.

When truthfully, you won't know what your employee is capable of until you give them the opportunity to thrive.

Allow your employee to step into their full potential to see them truly thrive, for the sake of your company and their mental health.
